#04 Natural Light Photography & Reflectors

Natural light photographers use available light as the source of illumination in their photography, no artificial or additional lighting. With only one source of illumination, harsh shadows can accentuate features and look unflattering on your subject. When photographing people, this is usually seen on the underside of the face (the chin, nose, etc.).

Using a reflector to bounce available light into those shadow areas can lighten and even remove these shadows from your subject, resulting in a more pleasing photograph. Reflectors are most commonly used outdoors, but can also benefit your photography for indoor shooting.

Some reflectors have different materials that can be removed or changed out with a zippered case. Others have just one color. The Westcott 5-in-1 Reflector set, for example, includes white, gold, black, silver sides and a translucent center. Reflectors are available in a range of sizes and prices, as well as quality.

The White Side casts a soft clean light onto your subject. It is used when there is ample light outside, like a sunny day.

The Gold Side casts a very warm light onto your subject. It is useful for filling in shadow areas that are cooler than the rest of your scene, for example, sunset in the background or fall portraits.

The Silver Side casts a very strong and more harsh light onto your subject. It is useful in low light situations, or when the reflector must be placed at a distance from your subject.

The Black Side does the opposite of a reflector, because it takes light away from the scene. Also known as a flag, it can be used to block light from your subject or to subtract light from one side of the subject producing a higher contrast ratio of lighting.

The Translucent Center, known a diffuser, softens the lighting when placed between your subject and the light source.

They Say It's Our Birthday

This month we celebrate our Silver Anniversary (that's 25 years in business to you and me) and we could not be more excited to still be serving our friends, new and old, here in Tulsa, OK.  To celebrate, will be hosting a 25th Anniversary Party to raise a toast and celebrate our years in business and to (fingers crossed) our next 25 years in the 918!

The party will be Friday, June 5th from 6-9pm here at the store (use the School entrance).  Feel free to bring your camera (we'll have ours) and we will provide the refreshments.  We will also have an exciting anouncement to make regarding The Impossible Project and yours truly so come on by the first Friday in June!  We look forward to celebrating with you!
