The Darkroom @ Apertures Photo

While some of your may already know that we have been working on building out one of our darkrooms into a teaching and rental space, others may be in the dark (so to speak).  We are very proud to finally announce that we are ready to start teaching and renting to our enthusiastic film community here in Tulsa.  Our first class, which will encompass black and white photography, film developing, and printing will start on December 1st (click HERE for more information or to sign up).  Information on our EQUIPMENT and RATES can be found by clicking the links.  We are excited to be able to offer our darkroom space to the public and look forward to serving old and new film shooters alike.

Impossible Project US Road Show

Missed it?  Don't worry!  The fine folks at The Impossible Project left us with a bunch of Creative Technique How-To cards that will walk you through processes like image manipulation and emulsion lifts.  Stop in and ask for a set of cards.  They're fun and free - and anything free is worth saving up for!

Mark your calanders for June 24th, 2015 because The Impossible Project US Road Show is coming to Apertures Photo!

Stop by the store from 1-5pm to try out classic Polaroid cameras, turn your digital images into real instant photos and explore creative techniques.

We're excited.  Really excited.  And you probably are too so don't miss this very special one-day event!

They Say It's Our Birthday

This month we celebrate our Silver Anniversary (that's 25 years in business to you and me) and we could not be more excited to still be serving our friends, new and old, here in Tulsa, OK.  To celebrate, will be hosting a 25th Anniversary Party to raise a toast and celebrate our years in business and to (fingers crossed) our next 25 years in the 918!

The party will be Friday, June 5th from 6-9pm here at the store (use the School entrance).  Feel free to bring your camera (we'll have ours) and we will provide the refreshments.  We will also have an exciting anouncement to make regarding The Impossible Project and yours truly so come on by the first Friday in June!  We look forward to celebrating with you!

Beauty and the Dish

While beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, beautiful light is in the beholder of the beauty dish.  Beauty dishes have long been used by fashion and portrait photographers to wrap light around their subject's face and create softer shadows both on and behind them.  Beauty dishes create stronger highlights than soft boxes (which, as their name suggests, create very soft light) that can help diminish skin imperfections while creating a more dynamic image.  Another element added to images shot with the use of a beauty dish is the addition of a round catchlight to the eyes instead of the square light provided by most softboxes (with the exclusion of octagonal boxes).

Local portrait and agency photographer Kevin Camp (http://kevincampphoto.com/gallery/) is a big fan of the beauty dish, particularly the Phottix Luna Collapsible Beauty Dish.  Kevin became a fast fan of the Phottix Luna Collapsible Beauty Dish because its ability to provide the results of a traditional metal beauty dish (soft, wrapped light and ease of post-processing) with the portability and quick setup/teardown of an umbrella.  Additionaly the dish comes with a Bowens speed ring allowing it to be easily adapted to studio lights or speedlights on a bracket.
